Custom Furniture, Step by Step: What Happens at Each Stage

"How long will it take?" "Will anyone check the quality before shipping?" What deters people from custom furniture is rarely the price — it is the opaque process. This guide lays out MUXI's custom furniture workflow: what happens at each stage, what you need to prepare, and where quality is checked.

Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf

Off-the-shelf means choosing within ready-made specs; custom means producing to your space and needs — size, fabric, countertop and functional configuration can all be adjusted. The trade-off is time: custom pieces need a production cycle and cannot arrive next week.

When is custom worth it? Non-standard spaces (an island that must fit exactly 150 cm), specific material preferences, or a functional layout built around your habits.

The Six Steps

From first consultation to furniture in place:

  • ① Consultation: message us on LINE or visit the showroom with your space dimensions, needs and budget — a floor plan or photos help greatly.
  • ② Specification: confirm size, fabric, countertop, colour and features item by item, all dimensions in cm, in writing.
  • ③ Quote and order: a formal quote based on the confirmed specs; place the order and agree on an estimated lead time.
  • ④ Production: the factory schedules your piece. Specs lock once production starts — request changes before ordering.
  • ⑤ Pre-shipment inspection: finished pieces are quality-checked; you may request photos or video to confirm against specs before shipping.
  • ⑥ Delivery and installation: large furniture is delivered to position, assembled, and inspected with you on site.

Planning the Lead Time

Lead time has three parts: production scheduling, shipping, and installation booking. It ranges from weeks to months depending on the piece and degree of customisation — the exact date is confirmed at ordering and written into your order.

Rule of thumb: with a fixed move-in date, start consulting two to three months ahead, allowing time for selection and spec confirmation too.

Where Quality Is Checked

The biggest fear with custom pieces is "not what I imagined." There are three checkpoints: the written spec sheet before ordering, the pre-shipment inspection (request photos or video), and on-site acceptance after installation — inspect appearance and function before signing.

If a piece arrives off-spec or transit-damaged, photograph it immediately and report on the spot; it is handled under the warranty and after-sales terms. The more detailed your spec sheet, the stronger your protection.

What to Prepare Before Ordering

Having these ready makes everything faster:

  • Space dimensions: width, depth, height of the placement spot and ceiling height, in cm.
  • Floor plan or photos: so the stylist sees the spatial relationships and light.
  • Access dimensions: lift door width, entry door width, corridor width — confirm the piece can get in before ordering (see our delivery access guide).
  • Usage needs: who uses it and how, pets and children included — this drives fabric and feature recommendations.
  • Budget range: a clear budget lets the stylist optimise within it.

Custom Furniture FAQs

How long does custom furniture take?

Production, shipping and installation booking combined range from weeks to months, depending on the piece and customisation. The exact lead time is confirmed at ordering and written into the order; with a fixed move-in date, start two to three months ahead.

Can dimensions be made exactly to my space?

Most models can be adjusted within a range for size, fabric and countertop; the adjustable range varies by model, so give the stylist your target dimensions to confirm. Specs are confirmed item by item before ordering and lock once production begins.

Can I see the finished piece before shipping?

Yes — request pre-shipment photos or video to confirm against specs before shipping, then inspect on site after installation. Spec sheet, pre-shipment inspection and on-site acceptance are the three quality gates.

What if the piece arrives off-spec?

Photograph immediately and report on the spot; it is handled per the order's spec sheet and warranty terms. This is why the spec sheet should be as detailed as possible — it is your acceptance benchmark.

Whole-home systems (built-in cabinetry, full-room planning) are served by our sister brand MUXI Whole-Home Customisation, separate from MUXI Home's custom furniture pieces. Message us on LINE and we will connect you.
