What Is the Standard Dining Table Height?
The standard dining table height in Taiwan and most of Asia is 74–76 cm, best paired with chairs with a 43–46 cm seat height. The rule: keep a 27–32 cm gap between tabletop and seat, so elbows rest naturally on the table.
When choosing chairs, check armrest height too — armrests must slide under the tabletop, or the chairs will never tuck in and will eat into your walkway.
Island and Bar Heights Are Different
A kitchen island counter is usually 85–90 cm — the same as kitchen worktops, convenient for food prep — paired with island stools of 60–65 cm seat height. Bar counters run 100–110 cm with roughly 75 cm bar stools.
For a prep-plus-dining table there are two approaches: choose an 85–90 cm island height with island stools, or a dual-height island dining table with a taller prep side and a standard-height dining side.
What Is an Island Dining Table?
An island dining table merges the kitchen island and the dining table into one piece: a prep counter and storage on one side, an extended dining surface on the other. In open-plan kitchens it solves prep, dining, storage and space zoning all at once.

How to Size an Island Dining Table
Remember three numbers: walkway clearance, per-person dining width, and countertop depth.
- Walkways: keep at least 90 cm around the island, and 100–120 cm in front of frequently opened doors, ovens or dishwashers.
- Per person: allow about 60 cm of width and 35–40 cm of depth to estimate seating capacity.
- Small-home solutions: extendable models run about 188 cm daily and pull out to 208 cm for gatherings; rotating tops swing out when needed and fold away to save space.
